Which level should I start at?

Chapter length is the quickest guide. These are the word counts of the free chapters 1 and 2 at each level:

Counted from chapters 1–2 of every Spanish series on Contos. The flagship series is counted once at each level.
LevelSeriesWords per chapterAverage
A1 Beginner12140–217181
A2 Elementary12211–301256
B1 Intermediate11279–366318
B2 Upper intermediate12304–477396

Open chapter 1 at the level you think fits. If you are tapping a word in almost every sentence and losing the plot, drop a level. If you finish without tapping anything, go up one: a story you can follow with a few taps per paragraph is the sweet spot.

The flagship, El Edificio de la Calle Sol, is written separately at every level, so you can see the jump for yourself. Here is Carmen, the building's doorkeeper, at A1 and then at B1:

Carmen, la portera, le muestra el edificio.

Carmen, the doorkeeper, shows her the building.

A1, chapter 1: one clause, present tense.

Carmen llevaba treinta años en el edificio, y conocía cada grieta, cada tubo, cada secreto de aquellas paredes.

Carmen had been in the building for thirty years, and knew every crack, every pipe, every secret in those walls.

B1, chapter 1: the imperfect tense (llevaba, conocía) and a longer, listed sentence.

What kind of Spanish do the stories use?

Spain Spanish. Characters work on an ordenador, check their móvil and live in a piso, and a car is a coche. Most series are set in Spain: Madrid, Malasaña and the Retiro, Segovia, Salamanca, Valencia, the Basque Country, Menorca and Cabo Finisterre. One B1 series, Las Máscaras de Cuenca, takes place in Ecuador.

If you learnt Latin American Spanish you will still follow everything; the differences you will notice are mostly vocabulary and the vosotros form in dialogue.

How a series works

Each series is one story told in short chapters: six for most series, eight for the flagship. Every chapter stops at a cliffhanger, which is deliberate: wanting to know what happens next is what gets you to read chapter 3 tomorrow, and reading a little every day is what builds a vocabulary.

Chapters 1 and 2 of every series are free. The rest are part of Contos Premium, and a new series is added every week. Words you tap while reading are kept, and you can turn them into flashcards.
