What Spanish does a love story teach you?

Mostly, the words for feelings, and they arrive in context rather than in a list. Clara has just inherited her late grandmother's café in Madrid when she opens a coffee tin and finds it full of old letters. The first one begins:

Mi amor, te echo de menos cada día. Cada día sin ti es imposible.

My love, I miss you every day. Every day without you is impossible.

El Café de las Cartas Perdidas (A2), chapter 1. Echar de menos is how Spain says "to miss" someone; Latin America more often says extrañar.

Romance also teaches a structure that tells you how a character feels at a glance: ponerse plus an adjective, for a sudden change. Lucía, the shy dog walker in El banco de las ocho y cuarto, se pone roja (goes red) the moment her dog steals a sandwich; in Andén 6, David se pone blanco when Marta asks who Elena is. The heart gets its own verb too: el corazón se acelera (her heart races), as it does for Lucía when her boss summons her in El Algoritmo del Corazón.

For the phrases themselves, see how to say I miss you in Spanish and how to say I love you in Spanish.

How do the love stories report who said what?

A lot of romance is two people finding out about each other, and narrators pass that on as reported speech: dice que, explica que, cuenta que, with each new fact given its own que. Here are two commuters talking properly for the first time, after he spills coffee over her newspaper:

David explica que es reparador de guitarras, que vive en Lavapiés, que no duerme bien.

David explains that he repairs guitars, that he lives in Lavapiés, that he doesn't sleep well.

Andén 6 (A2), chapter 1. At this level the reporting verb is in the present, so nothing else changes.

Higher up, the reporting verb moves into the past and drags the rest with it. In Secretos de Plató (B2), a screenwriter tells an actress that the rewritten scene destruiría her character: "would destroy", a conditional, because the telling is now in the past. Spotting that shift is what lets you follow who knew what, and when, in the B1 and B2 romances.

Which Spanish romance should I read first?

  • A1, for a comedy of errors: Comprometida por Error, in which a WhatsApp joke reaches the wrong Marco, he says yes, and her family starts planning the wedding.
  • A1, for something quieter: El banco de las ocho y cuarto, in which two dogs in the Retiro keep steering their owners onto the same bench, or Las Cartas de Martes, about letters slipped under a door above a Madrid bakery.
  • A2: Andén 6, a spilt coffee on the 8:17 from Chamartín, or El Algoritmo del Corazón, in which a dating app glitches and matches Lucía with her own boss.
  • B1: La Última Temporada, four friends' last summer in a house on the Basque coast, or El Reloj de Once Minutos, in a Madrid café where notes under the sugar bowl get answered.
  • B2: Churros y Porras: La Calle de la Discordia, in which the heirs of a bakery and the churro shop across the street meet in secret, or Secretos de Plató, behind the cameras of a television drama.

Several romances are also mysteries, among them the flagship El Edificio de la Calle Sol; the Spanish mystery stories list them all. New to Spanish? Start with the A1 stories for beginners.

Frequently asked questions

Which terms of endearment will I meet?

Plenty. A doorkeeper calls the new tenant cielo and cariño, a father calls his daughter mi amor, and a retired postman greets a secret couple with tortolitos (lovebirds). In Spain these are used warmly with friends and neighbours too, not only with partners.

Which Spanish romance is easiest?

The A1 ones. Their free chapters run 156–217 words in short present-tense sentences. Comprometida por Error and El banco de las ocho y cuarto are both romantic comedies, which helps: the situation carries you when a word doesn't.

Are the romance stories explicit?

No. They are about crushes, misunderstandings, old letters and rivals falling for each other, and they stay at the level of a held hand or a kiss off-camera.

How many romance chapters are free?

Chapters 1 and 2 of every series on this page, 34 chapters in all, in your browser or on iPhone and iPad. The rest are part of Contos Premium.
