Why do things 'go missing' in Korean crime stories?

Korean narrators often tell a theft from the victim's side: the thing disappears, and the thief stays out of the sentence until there is a suspect. Two verbs carry it. 없어지다 (to go missing) comes from 없다, "not there", and 사라지다 means to vanish. 훔치다 (to steal) waits until someone is accused.

매주 월요일 같은 시간에 양말이 없어진다.

Maeju woryoil gateun sigane yangmari eopseojinda.

Every Monday, at the same time, socks go missing.

월요일의 작은 비밀 (Monday's Little Secret), A1 chapter 1. 없어진다 is 없어지다 in the plain present; the -어지다 ending turns "not there" into a change of state, "comes to be not there".

The pattern runs up the levels. At A2 a stallholder at Namdaemun Market complains "물건들이 사라져요. 계속." (Things keep disappearing.) in 남대문 탐정사무소 (The Namdaemun Detective Agency). At B1 a grandmother on the night train to Busan opens her bundle and cries "어머나! 내 비녀가 없어!" (Oh my! My hairpin's gone!).

Which crime words will I learn?

The vocabulary grows with the level. A1 and A2 stories manage with everyday words; the police-station language arrives at B2.

Several of these are Sino-Korean, like most legal and official words, so they are easier to remember once you have met them in a scene than from a list.

Which Korean crime story should I read first?

  • A1: 월요일의 작은 비밀, in which a retired neighbour stakes out the laundry room, or 지갑의 비밀 (The Wallet's Secret), a lost wallet that comes back with five million won extra and an old thank-you note.
  • A2: 소포 뒤바뀐 날 (The Day the Parcels Got Mixed Up): a courier in the rain swaps two identical boxes, one full of cash. Or 새벽의 레시피 노트, about someone secretly correcting a bakery's recipe book at night.
  • B1: 새벽열차의 사라진 보물 (The Vanished Treasure of the Dawn Train), or 붓질의 비밀, where a museum night guard notices that the brushwork on a painting has changed.
  • B2: 할머니의 그림 비밀 (Grandmother's Painted Secret), about a painting a retired art teacher made under a friend's name fifty years ago, or 골목의 눈 (Eyes of the Alley), a neighbourhood watch that includes a retired intelligence officer.
