Intermediate Korean short stories (B1)

Contos has 12 Korean story series at B1, the first intermediate level. Nearly all are narrated in the plain past (-었다), in sentences long enough to need noun modifiers, connecting endings and reported speech. Plots include a Busan lighthouse lit again after thirty dark years and a jade hairpin lost on a night train. Chapters 1 and 2 are free.

What changes in Korean at B1?

Three things stand out. The narration settles into the plain past. Descriptions grow in front of the noun, so a whole clause can sit before the word it describes. And characters stop being quoted word for word: what someone said is folded into the sentence with -다고, -냐고 or the spoken shortcut -대.

삼십 년 동안 꺼져 있던 불이 갑자기 타올랐다는 신문 기사는 사실이었다.

Samsip nyeon dongan kkeojyeo itdeon buri gapjagi taollatdaneun sinmun gisaneun sasirieotda.

The newspaper story that the light, dark for thirty years, had suddenly blazed up again was true.

등대지기의 귀환 (The Return of the Lighthouse Keeper), B1 chapter 1. Everything before 신문 기사는 (the newspaper story) describes it. 꺼져 있던 means "that had been out", and 타올랐다는 packs "saying that it blazed up" into a single modifier.

김치 항아리 안에서… 뭔가를 찾았대.

Gimchi hangari aneseo… mwongareul chajatdae.

She says she found something… inside the kimchi jar.

타임캡슐 속의 편지 (The Letter in the Time Capsule), B1 chapter 1. Suyeon is passing on what her mother has just said on the phone. 찾았대 is short for 찾았다고 해, "(she) says (she) found", and is far more common in speech than the full form.

그때 키오스크가 덜덜 소리를 내더니 얇은 종이를 길게 뱉었다.

Geuttae kioseukeuga deoldeol sorireul naedeoni yalbeun jongireul gilge baeteotda.

Just then the kiosk gave a rattle and spat out a long, thin strip of paper.

비 오는 날의 쪽지 (The Rain Slips), B1 chapter 1. -더니 links something the narrator saw happen to what followed it: first the rattle, then the slip. 덜덜 is the rattling sound itself.

You may have met these endings in a course already. In a B1 chapter they arrive several to a paragraph, and that repetition is what makes them automatic.

How do you untangle a long Korean sentence?

Korean puts the verb last and every description before the thing it describes, so a long sentence can feel back to front. Take this one, about a train attendant with a bag of cat food in his pocket:

그는 늘 웃는 얼굴이었지만, 그날은 주머니 속에서 고양이 사료 봉지가 바스락거려서 조금 불안했다.

Geuneun neul unneun eolgurieotjiman, geunareun jumeoni sogeseo goyangi saryo bongjiga baseurakgeoryeoseo jogeum buranhaetda.

He always wore a smile, but that day a bag of cat food was rustling in his pocket, so he was a little uneasy.

새벽열차의 사라진 보물 (The Vanished Treasure of the Dawn Train), B1 chapter 1.

  1. Split it at the connecting endings. -지만 (but) and -아서/어서 (so) each close a clause: he always had a smiling face / but that day the bag rustled / so he was uneasy.
  2. Find the verb at the end of each piece. 얼굴이었지만, 바스락거려서, 불안했다: three verbs, three ideas.
  3. Let the particles assign the roles. 은/는 marks the topic (그는, 그날은), 이/가 marks what is doing something (봉지가, the bag) and 에서 says where (주머니 속에서, inside the pocket).
  4. Read modifiers from right to left. In 늘 웃는 얼굴, the noun comes last: "a face that always smiles".

Then read the sentence again from the start without stopping. After a few chapters the steps happen without thinking. Our guide to learning Korean by reading suggests a routine to build around them.

Which B1 Korean story should I start with?

  • For a classic mystery: The Return of the Lighthouse Keeper. A young journalist drives out to the lighthouse at Igidae, relit after thirty years, and its keeper's daughter tells her to stay away.
  • For a train puzzle: The Vanished Treasure of the Dawn Train. A grandmother's jade hairpin, handed down four generations, goes missing between Daejeon and Dongdaegu, and every passenger nearby is hiding something small.
  • For gentle sci-fi: The Letter in the Time Capsule, a school reunion where a letter buried twenty years ago knows about a ring lost last month, or The Rain Slips, a bus-terminal weather kiosk that prints clues instead of forecasts.
  • For memory sci-fi: 남의 일주일 (Someone Else's Week): a memory-backup service hands an office worker a stranger's week, bracelet and all.
  • For romance: 마지막 여름날들 (The Last Summer Days), four childhood friends at a guesthouse on Ganghwado before one of them marries.
  • For comedy and family: 반쪽의 맛 (Half the Flavor), two siblings who each inherit half of their late mother's torn recipe book, and her tteokbokki shop.
  • For island crime: 약사 은희의 비밀 (Pharmacist Eun-hee's Secret), in which a new pharmacist finds a fifteen-year-old missing-person notice and recognises the face.

Frequently asked questions

What is B1 level in Korean?

The third of the six CEFR levels and the first intermediate one. A B1 reader can follow a story on a familiar subject without stopping at every word. Contos moves you up to B1 at 1,500 known Korean words.

How long are B1 Korean chapters?

From 148 to 238 spaced words in the free chapters, averaging 186. Particles and endings are written onto the word in Korean, so that is more reading than the count suggests.

Which grammar helps most before B1 stories?

Recognising the past marker -았/었- and the modifier endings -(으)ㄴ, -는 and -던 makes the biggest difference. Connecting endings such as -지만, -아서 and -다가 come next. Anything else you can tap: the meaning shown fits that sentence.
