Korean family stories for learners

Contos has 11 Korean family series for learners, from A1 to B2. A Daegu family plans a secret eightieth birthday, two siblings split their mother's torn recipe book, and a father's will hands the family hanok to a stranger. These stories are also where honorific Korean, the respectful language for elders, comes up most. Chapters 1–2 are free.

Why do Korean family stories use so many honorifics?

Korean marks respect inside the verb. Talking to or about an older relative, speakers add -시- to the verb and swap a few common words for special honorific ones. Family stories are full of grandparents and parents, so these forms appear on nearly every page:

할머니, 우리 어머니 돌아가셨어요. 한 달 전에.

Halmeoni, uri eomeoni doragasyeosseoyo. Han dal jeone.

Grandma, our mother passed away. A month ago.

반쪽의 맛 (Half the Flavor), B1 chapter 1. Junho is breaking the news to an old customer of the family's tteokbokki shop. 돌아가셨어요 is the honorific for "died" (돌아가시다, literally "to go back"). Saying 죽었어요 about your own mother would sound disrespectful.

A few lines earlier, the same customer says 어머니가 보시면 슬퍼하실 텐데 (your mother would be sad if she saw you), with -시- in both verbs because the mother is the subject. The honorific swaps you will meet most:

What do the Korean family stories show about family life?

Occasions and obligations, mostly, with a secret inside each. 팔순 잔치 대작전 (Operation Eightieth Feast) is built around a 팔순 잔치, the feast for a parent's eightieth birthday. 할머니의 바느질 상자 (Grandmother's Sewing Box) begins three days after a funeral; 유산의 비밀 (The Secret Inheritance) opens with a will being read aloud in a Bukchon hanok; 화성에서 돌아온 준호 (The Man Who Came Back from Mars) sits a family round the table with seaweed soup for a son just home from space.

Kinship words come with them: 손자 (grandson), 삼촌 (uncle), 장녀 (eldest daughter), and 누나 or 형, the older sister or brother as a younger brother says it. Korean has separate words depending on who is speaking, so a family cast is the clearest way to learn them.

Which Korean family story should I read first?

  • A1: 팔순 잔치 대작전, a surprise party in Daegu that Grandma may already know about, or 쌍둥이의 일주일 (A Week of Twins), identical brothers who swap lives for seven days.
  • A2: 찻잔 속의 시간 (Time in a Teacup), a granddaughter, an inherited tea house and a 1950s love story, or 우리 마을 합창단 (The Village Choir).
  • B1: 반쪽의 맛, two estranged siblings and the shop their mother left them.
  • B2: 할머니의 바느질 상자, 유산의 비밀, or 골목 끝 두 집 국숫집 (Two Noodle Shops at the End of the Alley), three generations of feud between neighbouring shops.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to learn honorifics before reading?

No. Tapping a word gives its meaning in that sentence, honorific or not. Reading family stories is one of the easiest ways to absorb the honorific forms, because you see who uses them about whom.

Are the Korean family stories sad?

Some begin with a loss, such as a funeral or a will, but the tone stays warm and often funny. The drama comes from secrets and squabbles rather than tragedy.

Which family story is best for beginners?

팔순 잔치 대작전 at A1. It is told in short present-tense sentences, and the plot is easy to follow: everyone is planning a surprise, Grandma included.

How many family chapters can I read free?
