What are the Korean mysteries about?

Most of them start with an object that should not be there. At A1, Minji moves into 강남 201호 (Gangnam 201), a flat with a view of the Han River, finds a small locked door behind her wardrobe, and wonders why the rent was so low in the first place:

왜 이렇게 싸지?

Wae ireoke ssaji?

Why is it so cheap?

강남 201호, A1 chapter 1. -지? on a plain verb is someone wondering to themselves. 싸다 means cheap; 이렇게 is "like this, this much".

From A2 the clues get older. A night receptionist in Daegu notices records, a hand-knitted scarf and photographs gathering in a motel room that nobody sleeps in. A class of forty-year-olds digs up a time capsule containing a letter that knows about last month. A granddaughter opens her late grandmother's sewing box and finds fabric scraps labelled with initials and dates going back to 1987.

How do Korean mysteries ask their questions?

A mystery narrator asks questions constantly, and written Korean has several endings for it. Which one appears depends on the narration style and on whether the character is speculating or simply puzzled:

EndingWhat it sounds likeLine from a mystery chapterSeries and level
-(으)ㄹ까?Speculating: who could it be? (The Secret in Handwriting), A1
The same, in polite narration준호는 왜 쪽지 내용을 알고 있을까요? (The Bookshop Notes), A2
(The Return of the Lighthouse Keeper), B1

Watch for them in the last paragraph. Every Contos chapter ends on a cliffhanger, and in the mysteries it is often one of these questions, left hanging until the next chapter.

The same handful of words also returns from series to series, which is how they stick: 비밀 (secret), 쪽지 (a note), 글씨 (handwriting), 사라지다 (to vanish), 숨기다 (to hide) and 이상하다 (strange).

Which Korean mystery should I read first?

(Operation Eightieth Feast), in which a family secretly planning Grandma's eightieth birthday finds a photo of her with a man nobody knows.
(The Guest of Room 7), or 내일의 라디오 (Tomorrow's Radio), a guesthouse radio that reads out tomorrow's news.
(The Letter in the Time Capsule).
(The Garden's Signal), where an apartment vegetable patch rearranges itself into letters overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Which Korean mystery is easiest?

(The Secret in Handwriting), both at A1. They are told in short present-tense sentences, and the questions they raise are simple ones: who, where and why.

Are the Korean mysteries frightening?

No. They are cosy puzzles: hidden doors, unsigned notes, a lost umbrella, family secrets. Some build real suspense, but nothing violent happens on the page.

Do I need to read a mystery in order?

Start with whichever series appeals. Inside a series, read the chapters in order: each ends on a cliffhanger the next one picks up.

How many mystery chapters can I read for free?

44: chapters 1 and 2 of every mystery series on this page, in the web app or on iPhone and iPad. The rest are part of Contos Premium.
