Upper-intermediate Korean short stories (B2)

Contos has 12 Korean story series at B2, the upper-intermediate level. Chapters run up to 274 spaced words in the plain past, and the vocabulary turns Sino-Korean and idiomatic: wills, witness statements, auction bids, hearts that drop. Stories include a painting forged in the 1970s and a bundle of love letters sold at auction. Chapters 1 and 2 cost nothing.

What makes B2 Korean harder?

Less the grammar than the words. B2 plots run on inheritance, police statements and auctions, and Korean builds that vocabulary from Sino-Korean roots: syllables taken from Chinese characters that recombine much as Latin roots do in English. These six all come from B2 chapters:

WordReadingHanjaMeaningSeries
유언장yueonjang遺言狀a will유산의 비밀 (The Secret Inheritance)
상속세sangsokse相續稅inheritance tax유산의 비밀
목격자mokgyeokja目擊者witness스무 살의 거짓말 (Twenty Years of Lies)
진술jinsul陳述statement (to the police)스무 살의 거짓말
입찰자ipchalja入札者bidder낙찰된 연서 (The Sold Love Letters)
송금songgeum送金money transfer화성에서 돌아온 준호 (The Man Who Came Back from Mars)

The roots repeat. 자 (者, person) ends both 목격자 and 입찰자; 금 (金, money) is in 송금 and again in 보증금 (a deposit), which turns up in a B1 memory-swap story. Spotting a familiar syllable will not always give you the meaning, but it often gets you close enough to keep reading.

Which Korean idioms turn up at B2?

Korean describes feelings through the body, and B2 narrators reach for these fixed phrases where an A2 story would simply say 놀랐다 (was surprised). Learn each one as a single chunk:

  • 가슴이 철렁하다, the heart drops: a jolt of fear. 영기의 가슴이 철렁했다, in 텃밭의 신호 (The Garden's Signal).
  • 무릎을 치다, to slap your knee: the moment an idea clicks. 서연은 무릎을 칠 뻔했다, she nearly slapped her knee, in 낙찰된 연서.
  • 딴청을 피우다, to busy yourself with something else: acting as if you didn't hear. The old postman does it in 낙찰된 연서 when asked about a missing ribbon.
  • 얼굴이 화끈 달아오르다, your face burns: embarrassment, in 골목 끝 두 집 국숫집 (Two Noodle Shops at the End of the Alley).

Grammar still climbs, mostly in the endings that compare and qualify. -기는커녕 (far from …) and -(으)ㄴ 듯 (as if) both fit into this one sentence:

기철 할아버지는 놀라기는커녕 오히려 안도한 듯 짧게 숨을 내쉬었다.

Gicheol harabeojineun nollagineunkeonyeong ohiryeo andohan deut jjalge sumeul naeswieotda.

Far from being alarmed, old Gicheol let out a short breath, as if relieved.

낙찰된 연서, B2 chapter 2. Told that the ribbon has vanished, the old man looks relieved instead of upset, which is exactly why the auctioneer stops trusting him.

국수는 식으면 불지만, 비밀은 식을수록 단단해진다.

Guksuneun sigeumyeon buljiman, bimireun sigeulsurok dandanhaejinda.

Noodles go soggy as they cool, but secrets set harder the colder they get.

골목 끝 두 집 국숫집, B2 chapter 2, from an unsigned note. -(으)ㄹ수록 means "the more …, the more", and 불다 here is what noodles do when left in broth: swell and turn soft.

Which B2 Korean story should I read first?

  • For a family mystery: 할머니의 바느질 상자 (Grandmother's Sewing Box). After a funeral, a granddaughter finds a box of fabric scraps labelled with initials and dates. The first date matches a theft in 1987.
  • For crime with a shifting witness: 스무 살의 거짓말, a café owner whose description of a jewellery-shop thief keeps changing.
  • For an auction-house puzzle: 낙찰된 연서: old love letters, a local legend they contradict, and an anonymous phone bid twenty times the starting price.
  • For family drama: 유산의 비밀, in which a father's will leaves the family hanok in Bukchon to a woman nobody has heard of.
  • For quiet sci-fi: 화성에서 돌아온 준호, an astronaut home in Daejeon whose story doesn't add up, or 텃밭의 신호, an apartment vegetable patch that rearranges itself into letters overnight.
  • For romance: 골목 끝 두 집 국숫집, the heirs of two feuding noodle shops in a Jeonju market alley.

If B2 is a stretch, the B1 Korean stories use the same past-tense narration with plainer words. For the long view, see how long it takes to learn Korean, or browse every Korean series.
