Why is Korean sci-fi full of English words?

New technology usually reaches Korean as English loanwords written in Hangul, so a sci-fi chapter is partly readable sooner than you might expect. Sound a word out syllable by syllable and it often turns into English:

  • 로봇robotrobot (착한 로봇 지우의 하루, A1)
  • 라디오radioradio (내일의 라디오, A2)
  • 앱aepapp (매칭 오류, A2)
  • 백업baegeopbackup (남의 일주일, B1)
  • 키오스크kioseukeukiosk (비 오는 날의 쪽지, B1)
  • 챗봇chaetbotchatbot (그림자 메시지, B2)

그 목소리는 내일의 뉴스를 읽는다.

Geu moksorineun naeirui nyuseureul ingneunda.

The voice reads tomorrow's news.

내일의 라디오 (Tomorrow's Radio), A2 chapter 1. A tired office worker at a mountain guesthouse in Gangwon-do switches on the radio by his bed. 뉴스 is borrowed from English; 내일의 is "of tomorrow", with the particle 의.

Loanwords have a catch: Korean spells them by sound, adding a vowel ㅡ (eu) where English has a consonant cluster, so kiosk becomes four syllables. Once you know the pattern, they are the easiest words in the chapter.

Which Sino-Korean words does the sci-fi use?

The science itself is mostly Sino-Korean, built from Chinese-character roots: 기억 (memory), 신호 (signal), 우주 (space), 중력 (gravity) and 화성, Mars, literally the fire star. They thicken as the level rises. At B2, an astronaut back in Daejeon still hasn't got used to Earth:

나사 우주복을 벗은 지 사흘째, 여전히 몸이 중력에 적응하지 못한 것 같았다.

Nasa ujubogeul beoseun ji saheuljjae, yeojeonhi momi jungnyeoge jeogeunghaji motan geot gatatda.

Three days after taking off his NASA spacesuit, his body still didn't seem used to gravity.

화성에서 돌아온 준호 (The Man Who Came Back from Mars), B2 chapter 1. -(으)ㄴ 지 사흘째 counts the days since something happened. 중력 (gravity) and 적응하다 (to adapt) are Sino-Korean; 나사 is NASA spelt in Hangul.

Lower down, the same ideas use plainer words. 창문 너머의 신호 (Signal Across the Courtyard) at A1 puts 신호, signal, in its title and tells the rest in short present-tense sentences.

Which Korean sci-fi story should I read first?

  • A1: 착한 로봇 지우의 하루 (Jiù the Good Robot's Day), a cheap robot that tidies a family's flat and then finds the bank papers under the sofa, or 창문 너머의 신호, messages written in a window across the courtyard.
  • A2: 내일의 라디오, or 매칭 오류 (The Match Error), a dating app that insists a junior marketer and her boss are a perfect match.
  • B1: 남의 일주일 (Someone Else's Week), a memory backup that comes back with a stranger's week in it, or 타임캡슐 속의 편지 (The Letter in the Time Capsule).
  • B2: 그림자 메시지 (Shadow Messages), a start-up whose chatbot lets grieving people message the dead, until one answer is something nobody could know, or 텃밭의 신호 (The Garden's Signal).

Frequently asked questions

Is this hard science fiction?

No. The sci-fi is domestic: one strange device or event in an ordinary Korean home, café or office, and the story is about the people around it. You won't need technical vocabulary.

Which sci-fi story is best for beginners?

착한 로봇 지우의 하루 at A1. Its sentences are very short and in the present tense, and the robot gives the story a clear focus.

Do loanwords make Korean sci-fi easier?

Often. Words such as 로봇, 앱 and 백업 can be sounded out into English, which gives you a few free words per chapter while you learn Hangul's spelling rules for borrowed words.

How many sci-fi chapters are free?

22: the first two chapters of each sci-fi series on this page. Contos Premium unlocks chapter 3 onwards.
