Upper-intermediate Japanese short stories (B2)

Contos has 12 Japanese story series at CEFR B2, for upper-intermediate readers. Chapters are more than twice the length of A1 ones, the narration is descriptive and literary, scenes cut quickly between characters, and the dialogue brings in keigo, the honorific and humble forms of business and formal Japanese. Chapters 1 and 2 of each are free.

How is B2 Japanese different from B1?

Not in sentence length, which stays much as it was at B1, but in what the sentences do. B2 narrators set scenes with light, weather and sound before anything happens, use several clauses where B1 used one, and keep two or three storylines running in the same chapter. Measured on the free chapters (October 2026), a B2 chapter is about 750 characters long, around a quarter longer than at B1. This is how a theft case opens in Kamakura:

鎌倉 の 小さな 商店街 は、午後 の 光 が 斜め に 落ちて、静かだった。

Kamakura no chiisana shōtengai wa, gogo no hikari ga naname ni ochite, shizuka datta.

Kamakura's little shopping street lay quiet, the afternoon light falling across it at a slant.

Twenty Years of Silence, chapter 1 (B2). The topic (the shopping street) comes first, a whole scene sits inside the sentence (光 が 斜め に 落ちて, the light falling at a slant), and only then the description it belongs to: 静かだった.

Vocabulary moves the same way. Alongside everyday words you meet written ones such as 沈黙 (silence), 遺言状 (a will) and 来歴 (provenance). The kanji share barely rises from B1; what rises is the number of different kanji.

Does B2 Japanese include keigo?

Yes, and B2 is the first level where it matters to the plot. Who speaks humbly to whom tells you about rank, distance and sometimes guilt. In Grandmother Satō's Secret, a retired calligraphy teacher in Kamakura gets a phone call from a stranger who introduces himself like this:

私 は 東京 美術 オークション の 矢田部 健一 と 申します。

Watashi wa Tōkyō Bijutsu Ōkushon no Yatabe Ken'ichi to mōshimasu.

My name is Ken'ichi Yatabe, from Tokyo Art Auctions.

Grandmother Satō's Secret, chapter 1 (B2). 申します is the humble form of 言う (say), the standard way to give your name on a business call.

Kyoto's Secret opens with a lawyer reading a will in stiff legal Japanese, an assistant on the TV-drama set greets his producer with お疲れ さま です, and the grandfather who runs a small-town auction house talks in the gruff old-man style with わし. Reading these side by side is good training for noticing register, which textbooks rarely give you in context.

Which B2 Japanese story should I read first?

  • For family drama: 京都の秘密 (Kyoto's Secret), in which a Gion kimono business is left to a woman nobody in the family has heard of.
  • For a lighter read: てんぷら 坂 の 二つ の のれん (The Two Curtains on Tempura Hill), two rival tempura shops in Kanazawa whose heirs are quietly in love. Its kana-friendly style makes it the easiest way into B2.
  • For crime: 二十年 の 沈黙 (Twenty Years of Silence), a witness in Kamakura whose story changes every time the police visit.
  • For sci-fi: 火星 から の 帰郷 (Return from Mars), an astronaut who comes home to his village with a story that doesn't add up.
  • For comedy: 大河ドラマの裏側 (Behind the Big River Drama), a leaked kiss scene on the set of a historical TV drama.

Frequently asked questions

Is B2 the highest level of Japanese stories in Contos?

Yes. Contos writes at A1, A2, B1 and B2. B2 chapters read much like plain fiction for adults, with tap-to-translate on every word.

Do I need to know keigo to read B2 stories?

Recognising it is enough. If you know that 申します, いたします and ございます are humble or polite versions of everyday verbs, the rest you can tap. The narration itself is plain.

How many B2 Japanese chapters are free?

Chapters 1 and 2 of each B2 series, 24 chapters in all. Chapters 3 onwards need Contos Premium.
