Which level should I start at?

Two things change from level to level: how long a chapter is, and which tense carries the story. Both are worth checking before you pick.

Word counts from chapters 1–2 of every Italian series on Contos. The flagship series is counted once at each level.
LevelSeriesWords per chapterHow the story is told
A1 Beginner12121–215Present tense, short sentences
A2 Elementary12200–300Present, with the passato prossimo and imperfetto for the past
B1 Intermediate12269–361Mostly the passato remoto and imperfetto
B2 Upper intermediate12309–458Any narrative tense, with the congiuntivo throughout

Make your best guess and read chapter 1. A tap or two per paragraph means the level is right. A tap in every sentence means drop one level; none at all means go up. There is no test to pass first, and the Italian CEFR levels guide explains what each level can read.

Is a higher level only a harder tense?

No. The flagship, La Pensione Bellavista, is written separately at all four levels with the same people: Nonna Pina, her grandson Marco back from Milan with a secret, Giulia the guest who never leaves, and Sandro the fisherman. Chapter 1 at B2 is told in the present, just like chapter 1 at A1, yet the two read nothing alike:

Nonna prepara la colazione: caffè, pane tostato, marmellata.

Grandma makes breakfast: coffee, toast, jam.

A1, chapter 1. One verb, then a list.

Il caffè brucia. Non è una cosa grave, ma per Nonna Pina bruciare il caffè è come tradire la patria.

The coffee is burning. It's nothing serious, but for Nonna Pina burning the coffee is like betraying the fatherland.

B2, chapter 1. Still the present tense, but with infinitives as subjects (bruciare il caffè, tradire la patria) and a deadpan comparison.

Higher levels give the plot more room, the sentences more clauses and the narrator a sense of humour. That is why chapter length is as useful a guide as grammar.

Where are the Italian stories set?

All over Italy: Turin's Porta Palazzo market and the Parco del Valentino, the Navigli and Brera in Milan, the porticoes of Bologna, Venice from the Rio dei Carmini to the lagoon island of Mazzorbo, Testaccio, Trastevere and Via Giulia in Rome, Montepulciano, Spello, Portovenere, Lake Como, Ostuni in Puglia, and a night train up from Sicily. The language is standard Italian everywhere; the places supply the food, the trades and the gossip.

Each series is one story in short chapters, six for most and eight for the flagship, and every chapter stops on a cliffhanger so that you come back tomorrow. Chapters 1 and 2 are free; Contos Premium unlocks the rest, plus a new series every week. Start with the A1 Italian stories for beginners, or pick a genre such as the Italian mystery stories.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Italian stories free?

Chapters 1 and 2 of every series are free, in your browser or in the iPhone and iPad app. From chapter 3 on, a series is part of Contos Premium.

How long does a chapter take to read?

A few minutes. Free A1 chapters run 121 to 215 words, and B2 chapters 309 to 458.

Is there audio?

No. Contos is for reading: you read the Italian, tap any word you don't know for its meaning, and review the words you tapped as flashcards.

Do the stories use a regional Italian?

No. The narration and dialogue are standard Italian, the variety taught in courses and used in books and on television. Regional colour comes from the settings, not from dialect.
