Italian sci-fi short stories for learners

Contos has 11 Italian science-fiction series for learners (2 at A1, 2 at A2, 4 at B1, 3 at B2). The sci-fi is domestic: one impossible thing in an ordinary Italian place, like a 1950s radio that reads out tomorrow's news, a café clock that answers questions or a robot that knows too much. Chapters 1–2 are free.

What kind of sci-fi is in these Italian stories?

Small-town and close to home. A memory backup at a private clinic in Rome goes wrong and leaves a librarian with a stranger's memories, including an elegant art theft. A weather kiosk in a foggy town square prints a slip that names a woman and tells her to give back an umbrella. And at a twenty-year school reunion, the class of 2004 digs up its time capsule and finds a letter nobody remembers writing:

Nelle prossime settimane, un anello perduto sarà trovato in un forno del pane.

In the coming weeks, a lost ring will be found in a bread oven.

La lettera nella scatola del tempo, chapter 1 (B1). Sarà trovato is the passive future: essere in the future tense plus a participle. In chapter 2 the baker hears a small "tin" on the marble.

Only one series leaves the ground, and only in its backstory: in Il Ritorno di Marco, an engineer walks away from the European space programme and comes home to Umbria with something he won't explain.

What Italian does sci-fi bring?

The future tense, because so many of these stories are about predictions. Everyday Italian often talks about tomorrow in the present, and the mysterious voice in La Voce di Domani does both in a single broadcast: a shopkeeper scoprirà (will discover) a theft at ten o'clock, and then, plainly:

Domani piove alle tre.

Tomorrow it will rain at three.

La Voce di Domani, chapter 1 (A2). Literally "tomorrow it rains at three": with a time word such as domani, the present is enough. It does rain at three.

The other thing sci-fi brings is borrowed technology words. Most come from English and don't change in the plural: il file, i file; il computer, i computer; il backup. Most are masculine, but l'app is feminine, after l'applicazione. In Una Settimana di Troppo, the young technician explains the clinic's mistake to Lucia with il sistema ha confuso il file: the system mixed up the file. Words like these need no tap, which leaves your attention for the Italian around them.

Which Italian sci-fi story should I read first?

  • A1: Mamma Robot, a Milan family and a cleaning robot that starts reading their messages, or Il Codice della Lampada, a lamp across the courtyard that blinks a translator's name at night.
  • A2: La Voce di Domani, or Cuore.app, in which a buggy dating app links an architect to her boss for good.
  • B1: La lettera nella scatola del tempo; Il Chiosco delle Previsioni; L'Orologio di Via Garibaldi; or Una Settimana di Troppo.
  • B2: Gli Ultimi Messaggi, a Milan start-up that lets grieving families message the dead; I Segni dell'Orto, a community garden where the plants form letters overnight; or Il Ritorno di Marco.

Almost every sci-fi series is also a puzzle, so the Italian mystery stories are the obvious next stop. For the gentlest start, see the A1 Italian stories; the Italian stories hub lists every series.

Frequently asked questions

Is Italian sci-fi hard to read?

No harder than the other genres at the same level. The technology words are mostly English loans, and the impossible thing in each story is introduced slowly, in everyday language.

Is there any space travel?

Not on the page. The nearest is Il Ritorno di Marco (B2), whose engineer has just quit the European space programme. Everything else happens in kitchens, cafés, offices and gardens.

Which sci-fi story is easiest?

Mamma Robot at A1: a family of three, one robot, and short present-tense sentences.

Are the Italian sci-fi stories free?
