What are the Italian family stories about?

Secrets kept from each other, mostly with love. In Ostuni, a family plans a surprise party under the lemon tree in the courtyard while the guest of honour turns out to have a train ticket, and a mysterious appointment in Bari, of her own. The story's first paragraph sets it up:

Nonna Assunta compie ottant'anni sabato prossimo. È un segreto.

Nonna Assunta turns eighty next Saturday. It's a secret.

Il Segreto di Nonna Assunta, chapter 1 (A1). Birthdays use compiere (to complete): you complete your years rather than turning an age.

Higher levels bring heavier inheritances. A brother and sister return to their late mother's trattoria to find her recipe book split between them. A will leaves the family villa on Lake Como to a woman no one has heard of. An aerospace engineer comes home to his parents with a story about budget cuts that nobody at the table believes. Some begin on the day of a funeral, but the tone stays warm, and the cliffhangers come from what the older generation chose not to say.

How do you talk about family in Italian?

With a rule of its own. Before a single, unmodified relative, the possessive drops its article: Italians say mia madre, suo fratello and sua nonna, never la mia madre. The article comes back in the plural (i miei nonni), with loro (la loro figlia) and when the noun is modified or made affectionate (la mia sorellina).

Alessandra guarda sua sorella. Ha un'idea. Un'idea pazza.

Alessandra looks at her sister. She has an idea. A crazy idea.

Le Due Facce di Giulia, chapter 1 (A1): sua sorella, with no article. The crazy idea is that the twins swap places for a week.

One word does a lot of work in these stories: nipote means grandson, granddaughter, nephew or niece. In La Pensione Bellavista, Marco is Nonna Pina's nipote, her grandson; in Il Mistero del Lunedì, Tommaso is the caretaker's nipote, and only the context tells you which. Nonna on its own, with a capital letter, works like a name: Nonna lo abbraccia forte (Grandma hugs him tight).

Which Italian family story should I read first?

  • A1: Il Segreto di Nonna Assunta; Le Due Facce di Giulia; Il Mercato dei Rancori, two families and a forty-year feud between neighbouring market stalls; or La Pensione Bellavista, the flagship, written at every level.
  • A2: Il Coro delle Stonate, where Nonna Assunta has sung in the front row since 1958, or La Lettera nel Forno, a granddaughter, a bakery in Testaccio and a photograph from 1968.
  • B1: Le Ricette di Mamma Rosa.
  • B2: La Villa di Nonna Giulia; I Segreti della Scatola di Nonna Rita; Il Ritorno di Marco; Due Forni, Una Strada; or Il Quadro di Nonna Giulia.

Family stories here often hide a puzzle, so the Italian mystery stories make a good companion. Starting from scratch? Try the A1 Italian stories, or see every Italian series by level.

Frequently asked questions

Which family story is best for beginners?

Il Segreto di Nonna Assunta or Le Due Facce di Giulia, both at A1. Each has a small cast, one clear secret and short present-tense sentences.

Are the family stories sad?

Mostly warm. A few open after a death, such as Le Ricette di Mamma Rosa, which begins on the day of the mother's wake, but the stories are about the living: what they hid, and what they do about it.

Is La Pensione Bellavista the same story at every level?

The same family and setting, written separately for A1, A2, B1 and B2, so each version reads naturally at its level rather than as a simplified copy.

How many Italian family chapters are free?
