What happens in the Italian love stories?

Most begin with a near-miss. A shy dog walker in Turin keeps sharing a bench with the same man every morning; two Milan commuters have shared a train carriage for months in perfect silence; a graphic designer's joke proposal reaches a stranger's phone, and his mother has the engagement party booked within hours. Some romances look backwards instead. In La Lettera nel Forno, Margherita finds a tin of folded letters under the counter of her grandmother's bakery in Rome, and the first one opens like this:

Marco mio, Roma senza di te non esiste.

My Marco, Rome doesn't exist without you.

La Lettera nel Forno, chapter 1 (A2). The letter is signed Lucia, Margherita's grandmother, who married a man called Giuseppe. Putting the possessive after the name (Marco mio, amore mio) makes it tender and a little old-fashioned.

At B1 and B2 the stakes and the casts grow: four friends on Lake Como for one last August, a gondolier who recognises a woman behind her Carnival mask, a hit TV drama whose cast is hiding a relationship until a photo leaks.

What Italian do romance stories teach?

The reciprocal si, above all: two people doing something to each other. Characters si guardano (look at each other), non si salutano (don't say hello to each other) and, eventually, si incontrano.

Per la prima volta, i loro occhi si incontrano.

For the first time, their eyes meet.

Binario 6, chapter 1 (A2), when the 7:51 brakes hard and a notebook lands in a stranger's lap. Si incontrano: the eyes meet each other.

Romance also brings the vocabulary of affection, and it is less romantic than it looks. Amore, tesoro and cara come as often from mothers, grandmothers and kindly neighbours as from lovers. The phrase that does separate the two kinds of love is the choice between ti amo and ti voglio bene; how to say I love you in Italian explains when each one fits.

Which Italian love story should I read first?

  • A1: La Panchina delle Sette e Un Quarto, in which two dogs seem to be arranging their owners' meetings; Promessa per Sbaglio; Il Codice della Lampada; or the flagship, La Pensione Bellavista, where Nonna Pina still lights up when Sandro the fisherman calls.
  • A2: Binario 6; Cuore.app, a dating app that pairs a junior architect with her own boss and refuses to unmatch; or La Lettera nel Forno.
  • B1: L'Ultimo Agosto, La Maschera di Venezia, or L'Orologio di Via Garibaldi, where an out-of-work postal clerk and an art student get answers to the notes they leave under a café clock that runs eleven minutes fast.
  • B2: Due Forni, Una Strada, set in Spello in the run-up to the Infiorata, or Dietro le Quinte.

Several of these double as puzzles, so the Italian mystery stories are worth a look. Beginners can start with the A1 Italian stories, and the full Italian catalogue has every series.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners read Italian love stories?

Yes. The A1 romances use short present-tense sentences; La Panchina delle Sette e Un Quarto is a good first choice, with a small cast and a lot of repetition.

Are the stories explicit?

No. They are slow-burn: looks across a train carriage, notes in pockets, old letters and the odd kiss, and nothing more.

Which Italian romances have a mystery in them?

Le Lettere di Via Garibaldi (A1), Il Segreto tra le Pagine (A2) and La Maschera di Venezia (B1) all combine a love story with a puzzle to solve.

Are the Italian romance stories free?

The first two chapters of every romance on this page are free, 34 in all. Contos Premium unlocks the rest.
