What do the German romance stories sound like?

They run on small moments and on what people don't say. Gleis 7 opens with two commuters who have shared a carriage for months without a word:

Sie kennen sich nicht. Sie sprechen nicht. Aber sie sehen sich jeden Tag.

They don't know each other. They don't speak. But they see each other every day.

Gleis 7, chapter 1 (A2). Sich here means "each other". The same little word is back when the two finally look up: Ihre Augen treffen sich (Their eyes meet).

A handful of verbs carry most German love stories, and you meet them early: lächeln (to smile), rot werden (to blush, literally to become red), sich freuen (to be glad), heiraten (to marry). Characters blush constantly in these series, so wird rot is one of the first phrases you will know without tapping.

When do characters switch from Sie to du?

German has two words for "you", and moving from formal Sie to familiar du is a small event in itself. Romance stories make use of it. Strangers start with Sie; friends, couples and many colleagues say du. When two older people who are supposed to be rivals say du to each other, the reader is meant to notice:

Ein Angebot, Konrad? Du hast dich seit 1998 nicht mehr in meinen Laden getraut.

An offer, Konrad? You haven't dared set foot in my shop since 1998.

Zwei Bäcker, eine Gasse, chapter 1 (B2). Oma Gertrud says du to the owner of the rival cake shop across the lane, though he has just addressed her granddaughter stiffly as Fräulein Hoffmann. By the end of the chapter it is clear the two of them share a secret.

At A1 the same thing happens on a park bench in Die Bank am Morgen, where two dog walkers begin with "entschuldigen Sie" and polite small talk about the weather. Watching who says du to whom is part of reading these stories, and it teaches you the rule faster than any table.

Which German romance should I read first?

  • A1: Die Bank am Morgen, two shy owners whose dogs seem to be planning their meetings, or Aus Versehen verlobt, in which a text meant for one Marco reaches another and Sophie is suddenly engaged.
  • A2: Gleis 7, or Herzensglitch, about a dating app that matches Maya with her boss and won't let her unmatch.
  • B1: Der letzte August, four friends' final summer in a seaside house, or Die Uhr im Café Morgenstern, where notes left under a fast clock come back answered.
  • B2: Zwei Bäcker, eine Gasse, or Tatort Liebe, set among the cast and crew of a TV crime series.

Frequently asked questions

Are the German romance stories explicit?

No. They are warm and everyday: glances on the train, notes under a café clock, a fake engagement that gets out of hand.

Which romance is best for beginners?

Die Bank am Morgen, at A1. It mostly stays on one park bench and uses short present-tense sentences and the same few greetings, so it is easy to follow.

How do I say "I love you" in German?

Ich liebe dich. Between friends and family, Ich hab dich lieb is softer and more common. Our page on how to say I love you in German explains the difference.

How many romance chapters are free?

26: chapters 1 and 2 of every series on this page. The rest are part of Contos Premium.
