What are the German family stories about?

Secrets kept out of love, mostly. At A1, Omas Geheimnis-Kuchen has the whole family secretly planning Oma Hildegard's 80th birthday while she plans something of her own. Herr Yilmaz, the baker downstairs, has a cake order from each side and is sworn to silence by both:

„Nicht sagen!“, sagt Thomas. „Nicht sagen!“, sagt auch Hildegard.

"Don't tell!" says Thomas. "Don't tell!" says Hildegard too.

Omas Geheimnis-Kuchen, chapter 1 (A1). Nicht sagen! uses the infinitive as an instruction, the way German signs do: Nicht rauchen, Bitte nicht stören.

Higher up, the secrets are older and heavier. In Das Schwarzwälder Erbe (B2), a Stuttgart industrialist's will leaves the heart of the family business to a woman nobody has heard of, and the letters in the attic lead back to the war. In Die Flickschachtel, a box of fabric scraps behind a loose tile ties a grandmother to decades of neighbourhood thefts.

What German does a family story teach?

Kinship words first: Oma and Opa, Enkel (grandchild), Geschwister (brothers and sisters, one word in German), Onkel, Tante, Cousine. Then the possessive -s, which German adds to names without an apostrophe: Omas Küche, Annas Hände, Gretas Arbeitszimmer. Names that already end in an s sound take an apostrophe instead, as in Jonas' Tür.

Inheritance plots also bring in the passive, because what was decided matters more than who decided it:

Das Rezeptbuch wurde geteilt: die erste Hälfte für Jakob, die zweite für Anna.

The recipe book was split: the first half for Jakob, the second for Anna.

Das Erbe der Schwarzwälder Küche, chapter 1 (B1). Wurde geteilt is the passive: werden plus the past participle.

Inside a family everyone says du. Sie appears when the family meets outsiders: the notary reading the will, a neighbour at the door, the baker downstairs.

Which German family story should I read first?

  • A1: Omas Geheimnis-Kuchen, or Die Tauschwochen, twin sisters who swap a cake shop for a design studio for a week.
  • A2: Briefmarken und Melancholie, in which Emma finds dozens of unsent love letters in her grandmother's café, or Der Chor von Lindenbach.
  • B1: Das Erbe der Schwarzwälder Küche, a restaurant, two estranged siblings and a banker waiting outside.
  • B2: Zwei Bäcker, eine Gasse, two rival family bakeries, or Das Schwarzwälder Erbe.

Family stories make good first reads, because kitchens, birthdays and grandparents are the vocabulary you learn first. Start with the A1 German stories, mix in the funny German stories, or browse every German series.

Frequently asked questions

Are the family stories good for beginners?

Yes. Family life uses the vocabulary you meet first: kitchens, birthdays, grandparents and cake. Omas Geheimnis-Kuchen at A1 is a good first read.

Do the characters say du or Sie?

Family members say du to each other. Sie appears with outsiders, such as a notary, a neighbour or a shopkeeper, which makes the stories a painless way to learn when each one is used.
