When do French characters switch from vous to tu?

When something changes between them, and in a love story that moment is the plot. French gives you a signal English doesn't: the pronoun. In Quai 6, Thomas and Margot have shared the same RER carriage for eight months without a word. In chapter 1 his notebook falls open at her feet, and he speaks to her as a stranger: Vous avez vu... (you saw...). In chapter 2 the notebook is missing, and the moment she blushes he knows she has it and has read it. He is angry, and close enough to touch her, but he still says vous:

Vous avez lu mon carnet.

You read my notebook.

Quai 6 (A2), chapter 2. Still vous: they are strangers, however charged the moment. That makes the day one of them finally says tu worth waiting for.

Watch for the switch in any romance you read. It can mean intimacy, or anger, or both, and the narrator rarely spells it out. Even the French for I love you is normally a tu phrase: je t'aime.

What French does a love story teach?

Feelings, but often through the body rather than a single adjective. Characters deviennent rouges (go red) or pâles, and their hearts race: le cœur qui bat trop vite, as Margot sits alone after Thomas leaves the train. And there are the letters. Sophie inherits her grandmother's Paris bakery and finds twenty-three envelopes hidden behind the bread oven, all addressed "Pour M.":

Mon amour, je ne peux pas te dire qui tu es pour moi.

My love, I can't tell you what you are to me.

Les Lettres du Moulin (A2), chapter 1. A letter dated 1962. Qui tu es pour moi is literally "who you are for me".

From B1 the romances start reporting speech, and in the past the tenses move back a step. At a Burgundy vineyard, four old friends gather on the terrace at the start of what may be their last summer together:

C'est Lucas qui brisa le silence. Il dit qu'il ne resterait que trois semaines, pas quatre comme prévu.

It was Lucas who broke the silence. He said he would only be staying three weeks, not four as planned.

La Dernière Moisson (B1), chapter 1. Lucas would have said je ne resterai que trois semaines; reported in the past, the future resterai becomes the conditional resterait.

Which French romance should I read first?

  • A1: Fiançailles par Erreur, in which Sophie texts a joke proposal to the wrong Marc and he says yes; Le Banc des Deux Museaux, two dogs in a Lyon park who keep steering their owners to the same bench; or Le Signal de Margot, a light in the window across a Paris courtyard.
  • A2: Quai 6, the notebook on the RER; Les Lettres du Moulin, the letters behind the oven; or Cœur.exe, in which a dating app's bug matches Léa with her boss.
  • B1: La Dernière Moisson, the vineyard summer, or Les Masques de Chambéry, in which a history teacher spends a winter festival as a rich, mysterious widow and a baker finally notices her.
  • B2: Pain et Chocolat, a baker and the chocolatier across a Lyon street, with decades of family grudges in the way, or Les Coulisses de "Cœur et Châteaux", a secret kiss on the set of a period drama.

Several romances are mysteries too, including the flagship, L'Immeuble du 14, with its love letters hidden in the cellar; see the French mystery stories. New to French? Begin with the A1 French stories.

Frequently asked questions

Which terms of endearment will I meet?

A mother calls her daughter ma chérie, a boyfriend says chérie and bébé, a bookshop regular says ma chère, and a grandmother surprises a secret couple with Bonjour, mes chéris. Older characters also say ma petite to younger women, kindly rather than romantically.

Which French romance is easiest?

The A1 ones, whose free chapters run 141–206 words in short present-tense sentences. Fiançailles par Erreur is a good first pick: it is a comedy, so the situation carries you when a word doesn't.

Are the romance stories explicit?

No. They are about crushes, misunderstandings, secret letters and rivals falling for each other, and they go no further than a held hand or a kiss.

How many romance chapters are free?

Chapters 1 and 2 of every series on this page, 34 chapters in all, in the browser or on iPhone and iPad. The rest are part of Contos Premium.
