Why are mysteries good French practice?

Because a mystery is a string of questions, and French has three ways of asking one. Spoken French mostly raises its voice at the end; est-ce que turns a statement into a question without changing the word order; and written French swaps the verb and the subject. The mysteries use all three, often in the same chapter:

InversionPourquoi Amélie sourit-elle ?Le Portefeuille de Monsieur Leclerc, A1, chapter 1

The inversion surprises people at A1, but it is easy once you see the pattern. With a name as the subject, French keeps the name in front and adds a pronoun after the verb:

Pourquoi Thomas regarde-t-il comme ça ? Pourquoi Amélie sourit-elle ?

Why is Thomas staring like that? Why is Amélie smiling?

Le Portefeuille de Monsieur Leclerc (A1), chapter 1. A retired accountant's lost wallet has come back with extra money in it, and he is studying the neighbours. Regarde-t-il, sourit-elle: verb, hyphen, pronoun, with -t- between two vowels.

How do the French mysteries change from A1 to B2?

At A1 the mystery is something small and close: a wallet left on a doormat, a cheap flat in the Marais whose key also opens a hidden door in the cellar, an unsigned letter on the landing that tells Camille a neighbour has lost her cat. Sentences are short, the present tense does all the work, and you can usually guess the next line.

At A2 the cast grows. A cat goes missing from a Paris courtyard and twelve neighbours become suspects; a radio in Provence reads out tomorrow's news. By B1 the secrets reach back decades, to a Breton lighthouse that relights after twenty-five years and a time capsule buried by a village class in 2004. At B2 the questions sharpen into interrogations. An inspector in the Marais finally asks the elderly witness who keeps changing her story:

Qui protégez-vous, Madame Arnoux ?

Who are you protecting, Madame Arnoux?

Les Témoins du Silence (B2), chapter 2. Inversion again (protégez-vous), and vous: an inspector stays formal, however close she gets.

Which words does every French mystery use?

Mysteries lean on the same objects again and again, which is good news for your vocabulary: a word you tap in one series will be back in the next. All of these appear in the free chapters:

  • la valisesuitcase
  • la clékey
  • l'enveloppeenvelope
  • le carnetnotebook
  • la cavecellar
  • le grenierattic
  • disparu, disparuemissing, vanished
  • la conciergecaretaker of a Paris building

The concierge deserves a note of her own. Several Paris series have one in her loge by the entrance, watching everyone, and she is often the first detective in the story. Madame Lefèvre in L'Immeuble du 14 is the model.

Frequently asked questions

Which French mystery is easiest?

Start at A1 with La Clé de Trop or Le Portefeuille de Monsieur Leclerc. Their free chapters run 156–228 words, in short present-tense sentences.

Are the French mysteries scary?

No. They are cosy: lost wallets, missing cats, old love letters, a stolen brooch, a forged painting. There is tension and there are cliffhangers, but no gore.

Do I have to read the series in order?

Each series is a separate story, so start with any of them. Within a series, read the chapters in order: every chapter ends on a cliffhanger that the next one picks up.

How many French mystery chapters are free?

Chapters 1 and 2 of each mystery on this page, 52 chapters in all. The rest are part of Contos Premium.
