What makes French funny on the page?
Often, a perfectly straight face. In Le Mystère du Cahier de la Boulangère, a young baker in Lyon finds that someone has secretly rewritten her croissant recipe in the margin of the family notebook. She tries the new version anyway:
Camille mange un croissant et elle est très fâchée. Il est trop bon!
Camille eats a croissant and she is very cross. It's too good!
Le Mystère du Cahier de la Boulangère (A2), chapter 1. Trop bon usually just means "really good"; here it is literally too good, and that is the joke.
Spoken French has a favourite trick for a comeback: the stressed pronoun. Moi, toi, lui and the rest get added to a sentence to say "me, as opposed to you". Odette, a retired postwoman in a Burgundy choir, finds the conductor hunting for her lost score and says:
Moi aussi, je cherche. Mais moi, je trouve.
I'm looking too. But I find things.
La Chorale du Lavoir (A2), chapter 2. Then she pulls a postcard out of her bag. Moi turns up again at B2, tacked on the end for innocence: Je ne suis pas responsable des sentiments des autres, moi.
Why comedy suits beginners
Most of the comedy here comes from situations, not puns. A WhatsApp joke reaches the wrong Marc, twin sisters swap lives in Montmartre, a robot does the housework and then starts reading the post. You usually know more than the characters, and that head start does a lot of the reading for you.
Some gags need no words at all. When the choir's score goes missing, Marcel the winegrower grabs a sheet of paper and holds it up in front of his face: Il la tient à l'envers. He's holding it upside down. Five words, present tense, and you can see it.
A joke is also a quick comprehension check. If you smiled, you understood the sentence. And funny series repeat their running gags, so the same words come back chapter after chapter without anyone drilling them.
Which funny French story should I read first?
- A1: Fiançailles par Erreur, the proposal to the wrong Marc; Maman-Bot, the robot in a Lyon flat; La Bataille du Marché de Strasbourg, two rival stalls and a nephew caught in the middle; Les Jumelles de Montmartre, a bookseller and a pastry chef who swap lives; or Le Banc des Deux Museaux, the dogs in the park.
- A2: La Chorale du Lavoir, the choir that must win a competition to keep its hall; Le Mystère du Cahier de la Boulangère, the recipe notebook; Le Chat de la Rue Mouffetard, a missing cat and twelve suspects; or Les Deux Colis de Margot, a forgetful bike courier.
- B1: Les Deux Moitiés, a brother and sister who must save their mother's Lyon bistro with half a recipe book each.
- B2: Les Coulisses de "Cœur et Châteaux", leaks, feuds and a secret kiss on the set of France's favourite period drama, or Les Yeux de la Rue Lamartine, a neighbourhood watch that always knows first.

Frequently asked questions
Will I get the jokes as a beginner?
Most of them. The A1 comedies are funny because of what happens, so you need the plot rather than every word. Dry, word-based humour appears from A2 and takes over at B2.
Which levels is the comedy at?
6 series at A1, 5 at A2, 1 at B1 and 2 at B2.
Are funny stories good for learning French?
They help in one practical way: you keep reading because you want the next joke, and the more you read, the more often words come back. Whether comedy works better than other genres is not something research settles, so read what you enjoy.
How many comedy chapters are free?
Chapters 1 and 2 of every series on this page, 28 chapters in all. Chapters 3 onwards are part of Contos Premium.
